Founded in 1856 on the shores of Lake Llanquihue, Frutillar Bajo concentrates its undeniable heritage charm: timber houses with strong Bavarian influence and colourful rose gardens along one of the most photogenic waterfronts in the south.

The Frutillar Music Weeks, a festival running uninterrupted since 1968 and held in January–February, brings together the finest national and international classical performers.

Its crowning achievement is the Teatro del Lago, inaugurated in 2010, a world-class architectural gem seating 1,100, designed to blend with the lake waters and the Osorno volcano.

Frutillar Bajo waterfront

A must-do walk along the lake edge that captures the town's magic: colourful German houses, the iconic pedestrian pier, the classic water wheel and manicured gardens with Osorno in the background.

Kuchen and local cuisine

Local pastry shops guard recipes over 170 years old: wild-berry kuchen, apple strudel and seasonal jam. A mandatory stop.

Classical and symphonic music festival since 1968, held in January–February, with national and international artists.

Waterfront promenade and water wheel

The wooden water wheel and the pergola pier facing the lake are the most exported image of Frutillar worldwide.

German Museum

Key venue managed by Universidad Austral that preserves and disseminates the architectural and social heritage of the European settlers.

Osorno Volcano

Its perfectly snow-capped cone rises on the opposite shore of the lake, offering the most iconic backdrop in southern Chile.

→Frutillar Bajo concentrates the tourism and the theatre; Frutillar Alto has the everyday rhythm of the village.

→The waterfront pastry shops fill up quickly in the afternoon — visit early for the best selection of fresh pastries.

→The scenic coastal road linking Puerto Varas and Frutillar (Route V-81) offers some of the most spectacular lake viewpoints in the region.

→Easy to combine in one day with Puerto Varas (20 min) or extend towards Petrohué Falls.

From
Apart Hotel Colón

Take Route 5 Sur northbound past Puerto Varas to the Frutillar turnoff. Approximately 35–40 minutes by car (50 km). Frequent intercity buses from Puerto Montt terminal.
