The perfect cone
of southern Chile

Standing at 2,652 metres above sea level, Osorno Volcano is the undisputed geographical landmark of the Los Lagos Region. Its perfectly symmetrical, permanently snow-capped cone — last major eruption in 1869 — dominates the horizon from Puerto Montt, Puerto Varas, Frutillar and Lago Todos los Santos.

Whether skiing, climbing or simply taking in the view from the road-accessible viewpoints, Osorno Volcano is the definitive postcard of Northern Patagonia. Its location allows combining it in one day with Petrohué Falls (15 minutes from the base).

During winter season (June–September), its slopes come alive with the Ski and Mountain Centre, offering runs with unparalleled panoramic views over the lake. In summer, guided expeditions conquer its glaciers and snowfields to reach the summit.

Osorno Volcano Ski Centre

Winter hub operational from June to September (snow dependent). Runs for beginners, intermediate and advanced skiers and snowboarders, all with unparalleled panoramic views over Lake Llanquihue.

La Burbuja Trail

A self-guided interpretive walk on the lower slopes of the volcano. Passes through native coihue and ñire forest with natural viewpoints over the valley — no need to venture into the high mountains.

Crater ascent

The ultimate mountaineering challenge. An arduous all-day journey from the Teski refuge, crossing glaciers and snowfields to the 2,652-metre crater. Crampons, ice axe and rope are REQUIRED. CERTIFIED GUIDE IS MANDATORY.

Ñire

Deciduous high-altitude tree that in autumn turns the volcano's steep slopes spectacular shades of red and orange.

Coihue

The giant evergreen tree dominating the dense forests on the lower slopes of the volcanic massif.

Condor

The world's largest flying bird, a majestic resident soaring on the powerful thermal currents above the crater.

Grey Fox

Native canid frequently spotted prowling the forest edge and the first snow zones in search of food.

Puma

Patagonia's apex land predator; a silent, solitary resident of the native forest that very rarely shows itself to hikers.

South Andean Deer (Huemul)

The emblematic Patagonian deer in critical danger of extinction, whose scarce individuals find refuge on the inaccessible Andean slopes.

Practical tips

→If travelling in winter (June–September) for skiing, always check the official snow report before heading up — conditions vary drastically.

→The crater ascent is a technical, dangerous high-mountain route. Hiring a certified guide with gear (crampons, rope, ice axe) is OBLIGATORY.

→The fully paved road to the ski centre (at 1,200 masl) has a cafeteria and viewpoints accessible to the general public — no mountain gear needed.

→Ideal to combine in one day with Petrohué Falls — the paved road starts just 15 km away in Ensenada.

→On clear days, Osorno's snow-capped cone is perfectly visible from Puerto Montt's own waterfront promenade.

How to get there

From
Apart Hotel Colón

Take Route 5 Norte to Puerto Varas, then Route 225 towards Ensenada and take the paved turnoff (Route V-555) ascending to the Ski Centre. Approximately 1 hour by car (75 km). Multiple half-day tours from Puerto Varas and Puerto Montt.
