The destination

The most authentic taste
of southern Chile

Just minutes from the hotel lies the Angelmó Market, the most emblematic gastronomic enclave and fishing harbour in southern Chile. Its picturesque artisan harbour creates a unique atmosphere: colourful boats unloading their catch at dawn, the cry of seagulls and the characteristic smell of woodsmoke and sea.

The harbour atmosphere reaches its most vibrant on Saturday and Sunday mornings, when fishermen unload their nets and the trade in fresh seafood fills the jetty with activity.

Beyond its unparalleled food offer, the complex houses an extensive Chilote craft fair where you can buy directly from the artisans: woollen knitwear, wicker basketry, native wood carvings and smoked preserves.

Wildlife, flora &
natural highlights

Sea urchin
The undisputed king of Angelmó; an intensely iodine-flavoured product enjoyed raw, very fresh, and seasoned simply with lemon. Available year-round.
King crab (centolla)
The giant crab from Patagonian waters. Its delicate, sweet meat is at its best between May and October.
Macha clam
A mild Chilean clam — a must-try, served melted au gratin or raw in its shell with lemon.
Piure
An exotic marine tunicate with an intense iodine flavour and deep red colour, highly prized by local palates.
Seafood chowder
A hearty traditional baked casserole made with a creamy mix of assorted shellfish, soaked bread, melted cheese and chilli.
Caldillo de congrio
Chile's most famous fish soup, immortalised by Pablo Neruda in an ode. A restorative dish made with fresh eel, potatoes, onion, tomato and coriander.

Practical tips
The harbour atmosphere is at its most vibrant on Saturday and Sunday mornings — arrive early to watch the catch being unloaded.
Prices in the established indoor stalls are fixed; at the outdoor craft stalls, friendly bargaining is part of the local culture.
If it is your first time with a fresh sea urchin in its shell, ask the vendor to show you the traditional way to eat it.
King crab is fresher and at its best between May and October, though available year-round.
Come hungry — southern Chilean portion sizes are generous and the temptation to try multiple stalls is irresistible.
