The island with
a soul of its own
Separated from the mainland by the Chacao Channel, Chiloé is the largest island in Chile (after Tierra del Fuego), a territory that breathes with its own soul. Its historical isolation forged a culture with living mythology — the Trauco, the Pincoya, the Caleuche — and a gastronomy completely different from the rest of the country.
Chiloé deserves at least 2 full days. The Pargua–Chacao ferry runs 24 hours with departures every 20–30 minutes, no prior booking needed.
Its architectural landscape is unique in the world, crowned by 16 native timber churches declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The palafitos — colourful houses raised on stilts — form the most iconic visual identity of southern Chile.
